Johnny Gill Hobgood, 69, of Rockledge, Florida and formerly of Severn, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharon; their children Lisa Smith (Robert, Jr.), Elizabeth Kallarakal (Varkey, Jr.), and Meagan Pantelis (Andrew); their grandchildren Erin, Lauren, Mackenzie, Madelyn, and Varkey, III; his sister Roann Hobgood, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, L.W. and Ruth Hobgood.
John was a retired United States Army Chief Warrant Officer of 24 years and a highly respected retired civilian employee of the Department of the Army. He served as a decorated intelligence officer and a linguist, mastering the languages of Chinese Mandarin, Korean, and Czech. His combined service to his country spanned nearly four decades in posts throughout the world, including Thailand, Korea, Germany, and numerous stateside assignments. He was a patriot, a scholar of history, and an avid collector of coins and gadgets. More importantly, he cherished his retirement adventures with his bride, loved making memories with his daughters, and experienced great pride and joy from his five grandchildren and his sixth grandchild that is on the way.
A memorial service with military honors and entombment will occur at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date to be announced. Contributions in his memory may be made to the University of Maryland Medical System Foundation (www.umms.org/ummc/giving).
